CAPE CANAVERAL -- A criminal and internal investigation is now under way after morphine was stolen from a Brevard County ambulance.
A paramedic, stationed out of the Cape Canaveral Volunteer Fire Department, noticed a vial was tampered with back in June.
Fire Rescue said the vials are under lock and key, and they have protocols in place to record each new shipment and who may come into contact with the potentially highly addictive drug.
“Essentially what it comes down to is this is a theft, and the fact that it involves a controlled substance of this type of level, is of concern, and the element of public trust,” said Agent James Core with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said while the theft is frustrating, the silver lining to the case is they have the proper protocols in place to lead them to those responsible.
