Banks Charging Overdraft Fees Before Purchases Clear
Monday, August 04, 2008 12:30:04 PM
A number of banks have started to charge customers bank overdraft fees even before money is taken from their accounts.
Customers with SunTrust, Bank of America, TD Banknorth and others are affected.
If a customer pays with their debit card, some banks will now charge $35 or more if the customer does not have funds in their account at the time they sign for the purchase.
The Federal Reserve has proposed a rule to give customers the right to demand that banks deny transactions that overdraw their account.
The public can submit comments online about overdraft fees and credit card practices until 5 p.m. Monday.
