VOLUSIA COUNTY -- After watching the water rise for days, one community near DeLand said it's fighting a losing battle against Fay's floods.

People in Stone Island along Lake Monroe have dealt with some of the worst flooding from the storm.

However, people living there are refusing to give up.

Residents who have had their homes flooded are now helping to sandbag their neighbors’ houses so they don't see the same fate.

They're also marking off the roads so people don't drive off.

Homeowners said a broken levee has made their entire fight a tough one.

"We were holding back the river on one side and Lake Monroe on the other side,” said Michael Hark, a homeowner. “You can fight Mother Nature for so long. She always wins."

Some residents have even hired private companies to bring in dirt so they can fill up more sandbags.
