DAYTONA BEACH -- With every passing day following Tropical Storm Fay comes more and more mosquitoes as the conditions continue to be ideal for the pests.
Counties all across Central Florida are getting a game plan together for the expected increase.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal spoke with Volusia County's main mosquito fighter, who predicted the skeeters could get as bad as the days following the 2004 hurricanes.
The Florida Department of Health encourages people to take the following precautions against mosquitoes:
- Stay indoors at dawn and dusk. Those are prime feeding periods for the biting female insects.
- Wear long pants and long sleeves when outdoors.
- Apply insect repellent containing DEET.
- Drain standing water from places such as cans, old tires and birdbaths.
- Installing or repairing screens on both windows and doors.
