WASHINGTON -- The salmonella scare is starting to add up for tomato growers, as analysts predicted losses in the tomato industry are already topping $100 million.
Industry leaders are calling for a congressional investigation into the government's handling of the outbreak, the source of which has not been determined.
Officials with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said the complexity of the outbreak and the industry's vast international supply chain have hampered efforts to find the sources of contamination.
The government is looking at other produce in an effort to find the cause of the outbreak, which has sickened more than 900 people in 40 states. See previous story.
