MELBOURNE -- Firefighters in one fire station are dealing with a pesky rat problem.
Since April, more than 30 rats have been spotted and killed at Station 71 on Eau Gallie Boulevard.
The rodents have been a problem for some time, but now some firefighters are complaining the droppings left behind are making them sick.
Melbourne fire administrators have asked the city for help in the form of a temporary building to house the five firefighters and some office personnel until a decision can be made on what to do with the building, which was built in 1962.
“There's jokes, of course, as with every other walk of life, people are going to make light of it,” said Asst. Chief Greg Anglin from the Melbourne Fire Department. “But I think overall they know we're taking it serious and we do take their health and safety into consideration, and we are going to get them out of here as soon as we possibly can.”
The Melbourne city council is expected to approve the funding at its meeting June 22.
