Tyler Crotty, seen here in 2004, was charged with careless driving Wednesday night after a crash that seriously injured a 9-year-old boy.

ORANGE COUNTY -- The son of Orange County mayor Richard Crotty was charged with careless driving Wednesday night after a crash that seriously injured a 9-year-old boy.

It happened on Daetwyler Drive near Judge Road.

Troopers said a car driven by Tyler Crotty, 17, collided with a Lynx bus and then hit a van at Daetwyler Drive.

Crotty, along with his 22 and 18-year-old cousins in his car, suffered minor injuries. However, the child in the van had serious injuries and was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital.

Troopers said there was alcohol in Crotty's car but that none had been consumed.

Crotty made national headlines back in 2004 for being caught on camera nodding off during a campaign appearance by President Bush.

He even appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman."

We contacted Mayor Crotty's office. A spokesperson would only say this is a family matter.
