Election Ordinance Could Extend Deltona Commissioners' Terms

Deltona City Commission

DELTONA -- City commissioners voted 5-2 Monday in favor of holding both the mayoral and city commissioner races during even-numbered years, thereby extending the term limits of a number of commissioners, as well as Mayor Dennis Mulder.

Supervisor of elections Ann McFall first presented the idea, because she felt the election process in Volusia County was disorganized, with too many elections held at around the same time.

McFall suggested to all 16 Volusia County cities, including Deltona, that they hold all their local elections either during even- or odd-numbered years.

If the ordinance passed in Deltona, that would mean the city commissioners and Mulder would each get an extra year in office.

Those positions were each four-year terms, and the last election was held in 2005, so the re-election process would be extended to 2010.

Commissioners Zenaida Denizac and Herb Zischkau voted against it.

The second reading was scheduled to be held in two weeks.
