CENTRAL FLORIDA -- Health workers said may have to issue a third day of warnings Friday because of poor air quality caused by smoke from brush fires.

About a dozen brush fires have been burning in Central Florida throughout the week, some bigger than others.

The most recent fire broke out Thursday night in Orange County, near South Hiawassee Road and the Florida Turnpike. See below.

Despite the smoke, the air quality forecast is only moderate and there is no ozone alert in effect, according to AIRNow, a government backed program.

Environmental Protection officials, along with the Orange County Health Department, have issued health advisories warning people about these smokey conditions.

"It should smell like someone is having a barbeque. And people usually like that smell. But, this alert is really for those with sensitive health problems, respiratory issues and heart disease," said Patrick Washington from Department of Environmental Protection.

Environmentalists say the map, seen in the slideshow above, outlines the standard air quality, which is highlighted in green.

But because of smoke and other chemicals in the air, that ozone level is increasing, and the higher the level, the higher the concern.

Marion County

The biggest fire is in Marion County where over 600 acres have burned in the Ocala National Forest. News 13 meteorologist Jeff Day says the smoke residents of Orange and Lake counties are smelling is probably coming from this blaze.

The fire started Tuesday during military training, and crews spent Wednesday setting hundreds more acres on fire -- on purpose -- to try to get the fire contained.

The good news is that no homes are in danger.

Orange County

Because of smoke in the area, the Orange County Health Department has issued an advisory for people who are sensitive, including the elderly, people with asthma and emphysema, with heart disease or children. People who work ouside are also advised to take precautions.

Meanwhile, firefighters managed to contain a brush fire that cropped up late Thursday night.

The fire quickly charred through two acres of a heavily wooded area near South Hiawassee Road and the Turnpike.

Firefighters were concerned of several homes in the area, but no homes were ever threatened.

Firefighters said there were a lot of natural fire breaks, like ponds, hat are in the woods, which should help with containment.

Orange County Fire Rescue kept firefighters in the area throughout the night to take care of any flare-ups.

The Division of Forestry said it was investigating the cause.

Seminole County

Meanwhile, the Division of Forestry and Seminole Fire Rescue are teaming up to fight a fire near the Orlando Sanford International Airport.

The fire has burned about five acres. There is no word yet on what sparked those flames.

Brevard County

In Brevard County, there are fires all over.

A new one broke out Wednesday near Blair Street in Canaveral Groves. That fire burned about two acres and also damaged power lines.

Miami Danger

The fire trouble is not just in Central Florida.

A fire burned dangerously close to homes in Miami-Dade County Wednesday.

The fire only burned about an acre, but fire crews had to spray nearby homes down with water and use a helicopter to drop water on the flames.

Malabar Scrub Sanctuary Preparing For Fire

As fires burn across the state, the state Division of Forestry is preparing what they call ground zero for brush fires.

Florida Today reports forestry workers are working to prepare the Malabar Scrub Sanctuary against brush fires by cutting firebreaks into a 177-acre section in the western part of the habitat land.

The land, just off Malabar Road, is considered a serious threat because of all the brush left behind by the 2004 hurricane season.

The sanctuary is close to several subdivisions and that has forestry workers worried about threats of a possible arsonist targeting the south part of the county.
