NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 6-year-old boy was bitten by a shark in New Smyrna Beach Wednesday.

Zane Atcha was walking in about 18 inches of water near 27th Avenue when a shark took a hold of the back of his left foot near his calf, making two cuts.

He was treated by Volusia County lifeguards at the scene and was then transported to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach where he received eight stitches.

Doctors told Zane's mother they do not expect any long-term damage.

"I was just walking in the water when I felt something bump me in the knee," said Zane.

Zane and his mother were at the beach with another group of kids as part of a Casa Montessori school field trip for their kindergarten graduation.

Beach patrol said Zane is this year's 11th and youngest victim.

The place where the shark bite occurred was about three miles from the jetty where most shark bites occur.

When asked if he would go swimming any time soon, Zane said only in his pool.
