NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The electric car is alive and well, and sales are picking up as gas prices go up.

Greg Welsh is a dealer for Chrysler's Global Electric Motorcars, or GEM, which is a low-speed vehicle.

Therefore, there are limits on where you can drive it.

"Well you have to be in a community where you have roads postmarked 35 miles per hour or less because these cars can go up to 25 miles per hour,” said Welsh. “So, you can normally map your neighborhood where you want to go. Beachside communities on the east coast, contained environments of golf course communities use them."

There are also a couple of companies that will convert your vehicle to all electric.

Right now, the price tag of such conversions is making the switch still too expensive for many people.
