BREVARD COUNTY -- The fires are dying down, but homeowners are facing a new problem – potentially contaminated water.

The county's health department said residents using well water in the fire-affected areas need to be careful.

Even if your house is OK and the well's working, there can still be contamination to your water.

Well installers said, in many cases, the PVC pipes carrying water are thin and melt easily. This can expose the water to chemicals.

"It wouldn't hurt at all to get it tested if the well burnt. If it's just a matter at the pump a little bit of PVC and I’m replacing that PVC, you're alright. But if it's the PVC down in the well then you might have to replace the whole well," said Skip Whynot, a well company owner.

One well company is reportedly repairing wells without contamination inspections to help folks get water.

That company is asking clients to sign a waiver releasing the installers from liability if the water is bad.
