ORLANDO -- An alleged project to help drivers save gas caused traffic to come to a standstill and brought out hazardous teams near the flight path of Orlando International Airport Saturday.
The incident happened at the parking lot of the Thrifty car rental lot on Hazeltine National Drive and Semoran Boulevard.
According to investigators, a man was seen rushing out of a car and quickly moving away from the scene.
When a security guard went to check the car, he noticed a suspicious device inside and immediately called for help.
Fire crews came out and shut down the road as crews inspected the item.
It turned out the suspicious device was nothing more than a science project to find ways to save gasoline in cars.
“He was trying to build this thing to help fuel efficiency in vehicles. So to us it looked suspicious. So until we could confirm what it was and everything, we just assumed the worst,” said District Chief J.R. Saez from the Orlando Fire Department.
Investigators said they did find the man who left the car, and said he was extremely cooperative in their investigation.
