DELAND -- Students in Volusia County schools could be paying more for meals in the cafeteria in the 2008-09 school year.
School officials told the Daytona Beach News Journal the increase was needed to offset the rise in food prices at the grocery store.
Students who qualified for free or reduced-price meals at school would still be eligible for those programs in the next school year, but kids whose families could afford it would be asked to pay.
If approved, students would pay $1 for breakfast.
Elementary school lunches would go up 40 cents, to $1.75; and lunch would cost $2 at middle and high schools.
The Volusia County School Board was expected to meet next week to approve the new prices.
