TITUSVILLE -- A grandmother faced charges after police said she left her 3-month-old grandson inside a hot car Friday.
Sandra Hayes was arrested and charged with child neglect.
Police said the baby was in the car for about 30 minutes while Hayes was on a test drive at a car dealership.
The highs Friday in Brevard County were in the low 90s.
Although the child was OK following the incident, police are asking folks to use this as a reminder to be very careful.
When a police officer recreated those conditions for 30 minutes Saturday, the mercury rose to more than 130 degrees.
Not only is it dangerous to leave a child in that situation, it’s also illegal.
"In Florida's heat you have to check your vehicle. Double check it, triple check it, make sure everything's clear. Animals, children," said Cpl. Gary Boyer of the Titusville Police Department.
Similar laws apply to leaving pets in hot cars. Those charges fall under animal cruelty.
