WASHINGTON -- Retailers began dangling discounts in hopes that consumers would come into their stores and spend those rebate checks.
The government announced Friday they would start sending out rebate checks beginning this week.
More than 800,000 electronic payments were expected to be sent to tax filers per day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with an additional five million sent on Friday.
Staples used promotions to urge small business owners to spend their rebates. Until May 4, it was offering $50 off purchases of $500 or more.
Home Depot urged customers to use rebates to invest in the environment and cut energy bills, offering discounts through July on compact fluorescent light bulbs and Energy Star appliances.
Wal-Mart and Best Buy also had plans in the works in hopes of getting people to spend their rebates.
Depending on your circumstances, you could be getting back between $300 and $1,200.
President Bush hopes the extra money for Americans will help kick start the economy.
But many who spoke with News 13 said they've already got other plans for the cash.
“Putting it towards credit card debt. That or medical bills,” said Deanna Byler.
“Unfortunately, the boss says I have to buy her a ring, so that is all I get,” said James Morse.
