CAPE CANAVERAL -- After more than 40 years hosting rockets, a Cape Canaveral launch pad came crashing down Sunday.

More than 200 pounds of explosives were used to bring down the Titan launch tower.

When it was built, the tower was the largest moving object on Earth. The 265-foot tall tower was used to launch projects such as NASA's Cassini probe.

The site will now become the new home to Space X's new Falcon rockets.

"We need to make way for future programs and for the next generation of rockets, which will be more efficient and a less expensive and will continue to provide the Air Force and the nation a path to space," said Kevin Hooper, the demolition manager.

Much of the tower's debris will be recycled, which is about 6,500 tons of steel.

Money made from selling the material will pay for the demolition.
