OCOEE -- A 22-month-old boy whose father said found a gun and accidentally shot himself in the face, was identified Monday by Ocoee police as Tyler Rodgers.
Authorities were called to the Rodgers' home on Keaton Parkway Sunday. Family members met them at the door holding the wounded child.
The father told police the child found the revolver and was somehow able to pull the trigger.
The gun is being analyzed. Police said the gun was not stolen, but it was not registered to the boy's father.
News 13 spoke with gun experts at the Shoot Straight Gun Range and Store in Apopka. Workers said gun safety locks could have saved the child's life.
"You can either put it through the top strap and just lock it. That way the cylinder cannot close. Or you can run it through the cylinder itself, and again the cylinder cannot close. If the cylinder cannot close, the gun cannot fire,” said Gunny Schmidbauer, the assistant manager at Shoot Straight.
Gun manufacturers and Ocoee police give away safety locks for free.
Police said they would wait for autopsy results before they determine if the shooting was accidental or if criminal charges would be filed.
