SORRENTO -- A Lake County sheriff's deputy told News 13 he was lucky to be alive after a group of men attacked him on the job.
Deputy Cliff McMennamy, 27, said he never imagined he would be fighting for his own survival Sunday night.
McMennamy was released from the hospital Monday after he was attacked by at least 12 men while responding to a noise complaint in a Sorrento neighborhood.
McMennamy said when he pulled up to the house, someone threw a beer bottle at his car.
As soon as he got out of the car, McMennamy said the suspect fled. A chase ensued, and the deputy was able to taser and detain him in handcuffs.
That was when a crowd surrounded McMennamy, and began to beat him.
"My biggest worry was one of them having a weapon -- a knife or handgun, anything along that line. Having me down on the ground, I couldn't have done much. That was the worst thing," McMennamy said.
Officials have arrested Miguel Gomez, 38, on a number charges, including aggrevated assault.
Officials also brought four more people into custody for being illegal immigrants. Those individuals were turned over the the U.S. Border Patrol Department.
This investigation was ongoing. The Sheriff's Office told News 13 more people could be charged in the case.
