SANFORD -- This isn't usually the time of year when we start noticing more mosquito bites.

However, in Seminole County, experts said mosquitoes have been thriving all winter because of milder-than-normal temperatures.

Seminole County Mosquito Control said it is working hard to kill mosquito larvae. One way they are doing that is by using a type of fish nicknamed mosquito fish.

"They're native to Florida. We use them in ponds. They eat many times their body weight in larvae. They reproduce by the hundreds, and they're a lot better for controlling mosquitoes in some areas than pesticides," said Edward Horvath, the program manager from Seminole County Mosquito Control.

Many of us are familiar with the sight of seeing mosquito control fogging an area to kill off adult mosquitoes.

Seminole County Mosquito Control said it's much cheaper and more effective to kill larvae before the mosquitoes hatch and grow into adults.
