Father Of Toddler Who Shot Himself Charged
Wednesday, March 19, 2008 8:04:28 AM
OCOEE -- The father of a toddler who apparently shot and killed himself was charged Tuesday with aggravated manslaughter on a child, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Dontavious Rodgers, 24, told police his 22-month-old son, Tyler, accidentally found a gun, then shot himself. See previous story.
Tyler died shortly after being found shot in the head at Rodgers' home, in the Admiral Point Subdivision, on March 8.
Rodgers told police that he fell asleep while watching TV with his son. He said that when he woke up , he saw Tyler holding a revolver he had hidden under his mattress.
Rodgers said he tried to wrestle the gun out of his son's hands and, at some point, it went off.
News 13 later learned Rodgers should not have had a gun at all, because of a past criminal record.
Rodgers posted a $250 bond to get out of jail.
