VOLUSIA COUNTY -- The health department is investigating a suspected case of bacterial meningitis in a 7-year-old Volusia County girl.

The girl attends to Indian River Elementary School in Edgewater.

Right now, doctors are waiting for test results back to confirm she has the potentially deadly illness. However, the girl is now being treated.

Doctors said there is no public health threat.

The school did send home letters to parents letting them know of what happened and announced the girl’s classroom was sanitized as a precaution.

This is the fourth high profile case involving bacterial meningitis and a Central Florida student this year.

Late last month, an 18-year-old Daytona Beach Community College student contracted the illness. The girl was hospitalized for several days.

A senior at Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School also got sick last month.

Back in January, the UCF campus was put on alert after a student there went to class while infected.

The health center even handed out antibiotics to some students.
