2 Dead, 2 Hurt After Planes Collide in Titusville (2)

TITUSVILLE -- Federal investigators were in Titusville Saturday afternoon looking into what caused the collision between two planes.

Two people died and two were airlifted away from the Arthur Dunn Airpark.

Witnesses tell us one of the planes was on the runway when another collided with it.

One of the planes was coming in for a landing or on the ground when it collided with another plane taxiing around the tarmac.

The two people inside the plane taxiing on the tarmac were killed instantly. One person in the other plane was ejected. Another person was trapped inside the burning wreckage.

Bystanders ran up to the burning plane and pulled both people away from the wreckage before the flames consumed the plane.

Witnesses said the plane in the air was doing some aerobatics before it crashed.

"They were kind of hot-dogging it. Like they were doing dive bombs or something, and usually you don't hear that on Saturday morning. They're pretty polite," said Matt Storey, who witnessed the accident.

"I've lived here in Titusville for my whole life, and been very active in aviation, and I can't recall there ever being any type of collision between two aircraft out at this airport," said Titusville fire Chief Scott Gaenicke.

Both of the planes were experimental-type planes.

Meanwhile, aviation officials are not still confirming the identities of the people killed or injured in the crash at this time.

However, News 13 has learned one of the planes was registered to Ulrich Christen of Indian River County.

Close friends of Christen told News 13 he was indeed one of the pilots and that he was badly burned.

These close friends did want to be interviewed for television, saying they would change their mind if his Christen is ultimately accused of being a bad pilot.

But they said their friend has been praised by many as a skilled pilot who loved to design and build planes.

They also said Christen only spends half the year at his home in Indian River County.

He spends the other six months in Switzerland where he is a citizen.
