It's a chapter in Florida’s history some would rather have confined to the history books.
But, reminders of the state's Confederate loyalties during the Civil War could soon take to the road.
The Florida chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is battling to make a Confederate heritage license plate a reality.
The proceeds would be used to restore Confederate gravesites and launch an education program.
Thirty thousand people have already signed petitions. For the first time, the group has found a state representative willing to file a bill to make it happen.
"It's a part of history. You know, in a free country, and we purport to be in a free country here, and especially in a state like Florida, that tends to, at least it puts forward the face that it honors its diversity and its tolerance, one would think that the history, heritage and culture of all of the citizens would be equally protected," said Bob Hurst from the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Opponents argue the plate would amount to an icon of racism.
