COCOA BEACH -- A health alert was issued for some Brevard County students after a senior at Cocoa beach Junior/Senior High School was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.
The Health Department confirmed Monday a female at the school has the potentially deadly disease.
The student was being treated, but others may also have to take precautionary medication, because the meningitis can be spread through saliva. That means anyone she kissed or shared food with could be at risk.
Symptoms of the illness include fever, chills, headaches and a rash.
A meeting for parents and students was expected to be held at the school at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
