ORLANDO -- An Orange County man charged with burning his girlfriend to death was found guilty of first-degree murder Tuesday night.
After only a few hours of deliberations, the decision came back against Dane Abdool, 21.
In 2006, Abdool doused his then-girlfriend, Amelia Sookdeo, 17, with gasoline, then set her on fire, because he thought she was pregnant.
Sookdeo turned out not to be pregnant.
Abdool never took the stand, but said he was only trying to scare the Sookdeo, not kill her.
The final prosecution witnesses included two of Abdool's friends, who said he talked about killing the victim months before she died.
"He said he hated her, because she vandalized his house, his car and his mother's car," said one of the witnesses.
Abdool told detectives he just wanted to scare her, but panicked when she caught fire.
Because he was found guilty of premeditated murder, Abdool could now face the death penalty.
If convicted on first-degree murder charges, Abdool could face the death penalty.
