Six notable Central Floridians who worked hard to break down racial barriers were honored at the Trailblazers Luncheon Friday.
Local business leaders, community activists, and politicians attended the ceremony, held at the Downtown Marriott in Orlando.
Former Orlando police Chief Jerry Demmings and city commissioner Daisy Lynum received recognition, along with Sylvester King, a cab driver who filed a lawsuit to end the city's segregated taxi cab system.
"He drove a cab that could only respond to fares in the African-American community, could not go to airports, theme parks -- he had to pay for cab, gas, no benefits," said State Rep. Geraldine Thompson, who organized the luncheon.
Thompson added that people of all walks of life were honored at the ceremony, paying tribute to Orlando's diverse history.
