Orlando Sentinel publisher Kathleen Waltz has handed in her resignation.
Waltz began her newspaper career at the "Chicago Tribune" in 1973 in advertising sales and held a variety of management positions for the newspaper.
Waltz became president and chief executive officer of Orlando Sentinel Communications and publisher of the "Orlando Sentinel" in June 2000. She oversees all of the company's business, news, opinion and Internet operations.
Ending more than three decades with the "Orlando Sentinel's" parent company Tribune, Waltz' decision comes just a day after word that Tribune is cutting between 400 and 500 jobs at newspapers across the country.
Tribune blames declining revenue for those layoffs.
Two months ago, billionaire Sam Zell orchestrated a buyout, turning Tribune back to a privately-held company.
Last weekend, the "Orlando Sentinel" published a quote from Waltz, calling Zell inappropriate for muttering a bad word after a question from a Sentinel employee. Zell serves as chairman and chief executive officer of the company.
