FBI: Copper Thefts Could Be Threat To Homeland Security
Wednesday, December 03, 2008 11:34:46 PM
WASHINGTON -- Thieves who steal copper can really cash in.
For months, Central Florida has seen a rash of copper thefts targeting homes and businesses. But now, the FBI said it could be a threat to homeland security.
The FBI said whenever copper thieves target critical infrastructures, such as electrical substations, cellular towers, and even telephone land lands, they can pose a significant threat to public safety, even homeland security.
The FBI said if caught, copper thieves could be charged with a federal crime.
The FBI said several informal task forces have been set up between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Still, officials said there is still a lot more work to be done.
