ORANGE COUNTY -- There are growing concerns about counterfeit money after a couple discovered two $100 bills they said had been issued by their bank were fake.
The Brasbys said they had just withdrawn $1,500 in cash from a FAIRWINDS Credit Union to pay for a money order at Amscot.
The couple said they were shocked to learn the bank could only help them if they had caught the mistake before leaving.
"If you don't encounter any illegal activity, how would you know if it's counterfeit,” said Amy Brasby. “And right today, I still wouldn't know what to look for."
The Brasbys also believe Amscot is at fault.
A spokesman for Amscot said it is policy to notify the U.S. Secret Service of counterfeit money.
However, the Brasbys claim the worker did not try to notify law enforcement.
The story ends with a happy ending. FAIRWINDS Credit Union called the couple Monday to say that they would be able to credit their account the $200 confirmed by the bank to be counterfeit.
