Ethanol Fueling Headaches For Boaters
Saturday, November 29, 2008 9:05:52 PM
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Some recreational boat owners are learning something new about the fuel they use.
Ethanol-based gasoline is causing headaches for repair shops up and down the coast. The fuel separates in the fuel tanks if the boats aren't used on a regular basis. The ethanol then frees up the gunk in the tanks, letting it move through the fuel system.
"It ends up in the fuel tank, and the fuel separator and the VST tank, which is the vapor separator tank, and the fuel injector motor and the carburetors. And that's an expensive repair," said technician Doug Coppola.
A carburetor repair job will cost about $400 - 600.
Ethanol-free fuel is hard to come by, and if you do find it, it's nearly a dollar more expensive than what's found at your corner gas station.
