Report: Orlando Airport Security Breach Was Mishandled
Saturday, November 29, 2008 9:46:46 AM
ORLANDO -- A report by the Homeland Security Department said a security breach at Orlando International Airport last year was mishandled.
It involves the case of Comair workers Thomas Muñoz and Zabdiel Balaguer, who are accused of smuggling guns and drugs on a flight.
USA Today said according to the report, Orlando police got a tip someone would try and bring a weapon on that flight.
Balaguer was taken off the plane, but Muñoz remained on board. The Transportation Security Administration wasn't notified until the flight took off.
Muñoz was later arrested in Puerto Rico with guns and 8 pounds of pot.
The security scare led to changes at the airport including increased security for workers.
Muñoz and Balaguer are serving prison terms for weapons and drug charges.
Delta isn't commenting on the report, but police and the TSA are blaming each other.
TSA officials said police didn't tell them about the guns and drugs until the plane landed, but the city's police chief said TSA was notified before takeoff.
