MELBOURNE -- Classes were cancelled Thursday at Brevard Community College following the detonation of an improvised explosive device in the math and computer sciences building.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad arrived at the Melbourne campus on Wickham Road to investigate reports of an explosion around 10:15 a.m. and the smell of sulfur.

Melbourne police said the explosive device was made up of glass, gunpowder and paper.

Authorities said it was not immediately clear if the explosion happened in the hall or the elevator on the third floor of Building 7. They said the explosion took place on the third floor, but when firefighters arrived, the elevator was on the first floor, wide open and had signs of damage.

The building was evacuated and the campus was locked down. Five students were treated for minor smoke inhalation, but otherwise no one was hurt.

Police said they don't know who was behind the incident.

"We don't know if it was a prank or if someone was trying to harm (someone). We are certainly looking into it. We have heard the rumors of all of it, so it is under investigation at this time," said Commander Ron Bell, of the Melbourne Police Department.

Classes will resume Friday as normal.

The Melbourne Police Department is asking anyone with any information to call CrimeLine at (800) 423-TIPS.
