Credit Card Thiefs -- 2 women (10/17)

ORANGE CITY -- Police in three Central Florida cities believe a group of women are preying on the elderly.

They said the women take credit cards, cash and checks and go on shopping sprees.

Surveillance video shows two women inside a Deltona Sun Trust bank trying to cash a falsified check.

Video also shows three women who used a stolen credit card inside the Altamonte Springs Mall and may have also used it in Sanford.

Police said the women are connected to a string of thefts. The women dress in hospital scrubs, go into Central Florida nursing homes acting like workers and steal credit cards, checks and cash.

One of them walked into the Merrill Gardens retirement homes in Orange City and Altamonte Springs.

Once inside the patient's room, police said, the woman wearing the scrubs asked the patient if that patient was physically able to walk to the bathroom by themselves. Police said that is when the patient demonstrated that they could and that was when the crime was committed.

"It's like a distraction and they go into the person's room. Whatever is laying out, they take -- the checkbook, the credit card or even the entire wallet," said Detective Jason Sampsell, of the Orange City Police.

Madalyn Rudolph lives at the Merrill Gardens retirement home in Orange City. She told News 13 that she was a victim.

Nobody from Merrill Gardens wanted to speak to News 13 about this story.

Now police from all three agencies are working to find the women before they strike again.

Orange City police are working with police in Altamonte Springs and Sanford. Altamonte Springs police say they believe the women may live in Sanford.
