Horses seized by Volusia County Sheriff's deputies because of neglect continue to recover, thanks to a group of volunteers.
Twenty-six horses were turned over to members of the Horse Protection Association of Florida and placed in seven different farms throughout the county.
They were taken from a farm in DeLand after the owner told deputies he had fallen into hard times and could no longer care for them.
One horse had to be put down because it was so sick.
Volunteers are providing food, tending to their medical needs and grooming the majestic creatures.
"I feel that they were taken in the nick of time. I think all of them should be able to pull through," said Jill from the Horse Protection Association.
Fearing retaliation, the association member said she does not want her full name used.
A judge will decide Jan. 25 if the horses will be put up for adoption, auctioned off or if they should be returned to the owner.
