UCF Student found with meningitis virus

Additional Information

A campus-wide health alert was released at the University of Central Florida after a student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

The school began sending out e-mails to students Wednesday night, saying that student Christopher Taylor was diagnosed with the potentially fatal illness.

Taylor, a business student at UCF, lives in Tower 4 at Knights Plaza.

The school said Taylor went to classes while he was contagious on Jan. 24.

School officials were working with public health workers and 12 other students who had close contact with Taylor.

The Health Services Center at UCF is handing out antibiotics to students

"We are prepared to meet any demand of students. We have 2,500 doses of the preventative antibiotic available," said Michael Deichen, UCF Medical Director.

The school said Taylor's case was unrelated to another case a week ago, when a student living at Pegasus Landing was diagnosed with the bacteria that can cause meningitis. Click here to read the previous story.

School officials said that, even though there have been two reports of meningitis over the past week, it is not an outbreak.

"We've spoken to Orange County Public Health and they do not believe this is an outbreak. They are sporadic cases. We've also interviewed the patients and can find no link between the two cases. They weren't together. They didn't know each other. So, they appear sporadic,"

In addition to the antibiotic, there is a meningitis vaccine available to students that, depending on insurance can run up to $106.
