Personal information on about 650,000 customers of JC Penney and up to a hundred other retailers could be in the wrong hands.
GE Money, which handles the credit card operations for the stores, reported a computer tape missing Thursday.
Some of the information included Social Security numbers for about 150,000 people.
A spokesman for GE Money said there was no indication of theft, and no evidence of fraudulent activity on the accounts.
The company is paying for 12 months of credit monitoring service for the customers whose Social Security numbers were compromised.
