Hate Crime?
Tuesday, May 19, 2009 5:57:45 PM
The Council on American-Islamic Relations of Orlando is calling for an investigation into a possible assault and battery case at the Prime Outlet Mall in Orange County.
Mustapha Elmejjati said he was attacked by a woman at the Children's Place department store earlier this month.
"You know I was just behind her,” Elmejjati said. “I was not talking to her. I was talking to the other lady. And maybe she heard my accent and said ‘we are in America here! Go out!’ I said ‘Ma'am I'm talking with you and I'm American too and I'm not finished’ and Pow! And I fell down."
The dispute allegedly started after the woman cut in line.
The woman who hit him said Elmejjati got right up into her face and that she pushed him because she felt threatened.
No charges were filed but the council said the Orlando Police Department should be investigating this as a hate crime.
