New Ordinance Causing ‘Shrub Scandal’ In Barefoot Bay
Tuesday, May 19, 2009 6:11:24 PM
A Barefoot Bay man said he's involved in a shrub scandal with Brevard County.
John Samperi said he tried to get his new home inspected. When he did, officials told him the structure was fine but the lawn needed work.
It turns out a relatively new Brevard ordinance requires even his one-eighth of an acre lawn to have five hardwood trees and 15 shrubs.
Samperi said there's just not enough room on the small Barefoot Bay lots for so much vegetation.
"I think if everybody had the required amount of trees, this would be a forest,” said Samperi. “It really would. This is less than one-eighth of an acre. This is probably the biggest lot.
Samperi has now planted the required trees and shrubs in his yard. He is still waiting for written confirmation from the county stating he can move in.
