Senators Demand Immediate Cleanup Of Former Bomb Site

In a story first reported by News 13, two U.S. Senators are demanding the Army Corps of Engineers immediately start cleanup of the old Pinecastle Jeep Bombing Range where live WWII-era bombs were found just 1,500 feet from a middle school.
The former bombing range is not only located near Odyssey Middle School, but also near the new Innovation Way high-tech corridor.
Sen. Mel Martinez and Sen. Bill Nelson on Wednesday asked the Pentagon to avoid any delay in removing all live bombs and hazardous chemicals from the area. The senators want the cleanup finished before students' parents attend the Meet Your Teachers Day on Aug. 13.
"It is very important that the Army Corps of Engineers gets this right and get it done quick, for the safety of the public and particularly the safety of the school," Nelson said.
"I think it's vital that we get this taking care of as soon as possible. I think it's an urgent matter, and that's how we addressed it with the Army Corps of Engineers," Martinez said.
The Army Corps of Engineers said the cleanup can't start until sometime in September. The federal government has pledged $1 million to begin the cleanup immediately.
