Launch Pad Demolished

Early Saturday morning, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station witnessed the demolition of Launch Pad 36.

The two mobile service towers sent over 145 missions into space for nearly half a century.

The last launch at complex 36 was on Feb. 3, 2005.  Because there were no other planned launches after that point, officials made the final decision to remove the launch pad, which was a $500,000 demolition project.

"We’re demolishing it so it doesn't corrode and become a safety problem,” demolition project manager Kevin Hooper said. “So we have to take the buildings down before nature takes them down."

Once the more 3,600 tons of steel and debris is cleared away, officials at Cape Canaveral will market the area to future launch programs.
