Winter Park's proposed commuter rail station will go in Central Park.
The city commission voted three to two Monday to build the station near the city's current Amtrak station. Some residents, including Winter Park Mayor David Strong, said putting a station there would cause too much traffic in the city – cutting down on park space and bringing too many cars downtown.
Also, the city was supposed to vote on an agreement with Orange County over paying for the station. Commissioners decided to postpone that vote until Monday after getting some last minute paperwork from the county.
The City of Maitland also approved building a commuter rail stop, but funding area-wide for the rail remains up in the air.
Congressman John Mica was in Volusia County Monday stressing the importance of the rail. He said the federal government would likely put forth $300 million toward the project.
As for state funding, the Department of Transportation pushed back funding deadlines for all counties involved while state legislators hammer out the details in this year's budget.
