A new study concludes that a flawed Medicare system is encouraging some dialysis centers to overuse a risky drug on patients.
The report finds that for-profit dialysis chains give higher dose of the drug Epogen than non-profit centers.
The report says Medicare reimburses dialysis centers for Epogen. Some for-profit chains negotiate discounts from the drug's maker, turning the medication into a moneymaker.
Medicare says it plans to report to Congress about its dialysis system this summer.
In other health news, a new analysis says the benefits of using antidepressants in children outweigh the small risk that the drugs will increase suicidal feelings.
Scientists say the risk they found is lower than the one the FDA identified in 2004.
The authors of the study say the medications are safe and effective and should be considered an important part of treatment.
Still, they say doctors must keep an eye on their patients who are on antidepressants.
The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
