As America's housing market continues to slump, a local homebuilder has started feeling the effects, laying off several employees.

Some of the customers who bought their homes through America's First Home said they have felt the ripple effects, complaining they did not receive the $500 gift cards they were promised when they moved into their new homes.

Jennifer, a recent homebuyer, said she bought a home through the company partially because she was promised a $500 Sears gift card for every new homeowner she referred.

Jennifer closed her home in July, and referred a friend, Christine, and several others. Christine bought her home at the beginning of the month.

The women said company representatives told them the business was closing its doors, and they would not receive the cards.

"The card was incentive to purchase this home from this homebuilder over other builders. When we don't get what were promised, we feel taken," Jennifer said.

News 13 gave both Christine and Jennifer's information to America's First Home. A representative said she would investigate the situation.
