A Seminole County school wants to scan students' fingerprints when they get their lunch.
Biometrics is a way to protect people from identity theft, and Hagerty High School in Oviedo will be using biometric technology for its lunch program.
School officials said using students fingerprints would cut down on thefts from student lunch accounts and speed up lines.
"It's a very simple procedure where you place the finger onto the scanner and it uses those measurements and matches up that finger with that student," said Regina Klaers, of the Seminole County Public Schools.
The school has already heard concerns from parents who didn't feel educated enough about the program. Now the school is sending informational letters to parents.
The letter states parents can opt out of the program if they want to, but said student information is "safe and protected."
The school said just several points on the fingerprint are being scanned and the results go directly to the main computer.
The letters going home this week are on the opposite side of student progress reports. The scanning started Dec. 11. The actual program will be up and running when students return from winter break next month.
