It is a high-powered display of some new high-powered weapons. News 13 got an up-close look at the new guns deputies will now be using on the streets.
"What we have here is a Glock 22. It's a 40-caliber, semi-automatic handgun"
Lake County Sheriff's deputies carry weapons like the Glock 22 on a regular basis. However, they will be toting around AR-15 assault rifles. Deputies hope the new weapons will put them on a new playing field.
"These weapons that we have now are a lot easier to handle, a lot easier to manipulate and a lot greater accuracy for our deputies. So, overall, a better weapon," Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesperson, John Herrell said.
From road patrols to criminal investigators and even school resource deputies, officials say law enforcement will be carrying these new AR-15 assault rifles to ensure safety during high risk or active shooting scenarios.
We have all seen such high-profile incidents across the nation and it is a reality that deputies can be faced with something similar.
About 100 rifles will be dispersed to deputies throughout the county. Not only do they hold more ammunition, but also deputies say they get better range.
Deputies say they will be able to shoot a target from about 300 feet, a big difference from their current 25-yard shooting capabilities.
"We just want to make sure that we're not reactive, but proactive. We want to be ready to face any situation that we may come into contact with," Herrell said.
Before deputies use the new rifles, they have to complete a Proper Use of Weapons course. They also have to undergo a two-day, 16-hour training session at a gun range.
