A scare in Pinellas County after a Burmese python attacks a handler at Tarpon Springs Aquarium.

Investigators say the incident happened during a show, when the snake became aggressive.

The snake wrapped itself around the handlers arm and bit her hand, scaring audience members.

The handler was transported to the hospital but was later released. No word on what will happen now to the 14-foot snake.

The Python is a non-venomous, constricting snake.

There is some doubt to the report but longest python on record was python 49 feet, found on Java in Indonesia.

While a large adult python could kill a human being (most likely by strangling rather than actual crushing), humans are outside the normal size range for prey.

Pythons will not usually attack humans unless startled or provoked, although females protecting their eggs can be aggressive, however cases of large pet pythons killing their owners have been documented.

The Everglades National Park has had an invasive population of Burmese Pythons since the late 1990s that have caused harm to the natural environment of the Everglades; more than 300 have been removed.

The snakes are not native to the south Floridian marshlands, but have been deposited there by pet owner who no longer wished to care for them.

Scientists believe that the pythons are a grave threat to nearly every species of animal in the Everglades, even alligators. There have been several accounts of python vs. alligator encounters there, including one in the fall of 2005 between a 13-foot python and a 6-foot gator that proved fatal for both.

The two were found with the gator's body protruding from the snakes torn open stomach.
