If a family member or friend has passed away, it might be tough for some to deal with, but they may also have to take into consideration how it is impacting their kids.
It can be scary, but how you approach the subject can make all the difference.
The U.S. National Library of Medicine offered the following suggestions:
- Keep your explanation honest, simple, and on a level that is appropriate for the child's age.
- Understand that death can cause fears and confusion in many children.
- Talk openly, and make sure you encourage them to ask questions.
It is also important to talk about your feelings -- fear, sadness, anger, or anything else you may feel. Show your child that the emotions they have are normal.
