A Heathrow woman has become the first in the world to be expecting twins after having a new type of surgery to remove uterine fibroids.
Marta and her husband thought they might never have a child. They struggled for two years to get pregnant. Then they found out why -- Marta had uterine fibroids.
"The doctor suggested to remove them," Marta remembered.
Marta then went to Dr. Samuel Brown -- an infertility specialist at the Center for Reproductive Medicine. He performed a new robotic procedure to remove the fibroids.
The surgery is a groundbreaking advancement in women's health care. It allows large tumors to be removed through tiny incisions, resulting in an almost immediate recovery as compared to the traditionally large C-section type incisions that require six to eight weeks of recovery time.
"So dramatic results, dramatic improvement, and patients can get back to normal living," Brown explained.
Following the pioneering surgery, Marta underwent in vitro fertilization. After a two year struggle to conceive, the couple finally got the news they had been longing for -- they were expecting twins.
While a woman has become pregnant after this type of surgery, Marta hit the record books as the first woman in the world expecting twins after this surgery.
"It means hope because you get married and you want to have a family. Of course I was extremely happy," Marta said.
Marta is due June 2 and she just found out she is having two boys.
