With one month to go before his wedding, a Central Florida man set out to lose 30 pounds in 30 days without surgery or drastic dieting.
News 13's Medical reporter Nancy Gay found out how he planned to do it.
Like many people, Josh Smith gained weight after heading off to college.
"I gained, since high school, probably 45 pounds," Smith said.
At his heaviest, Josh weighed in at 227 pounds.
"The road I was on was leading to overweight and the health risks associated with it later in life," Smith said.
Smith's doctor wanted him to diet, but Josh wanted to see what he could do by running alone.
"I haven't given up any fast food. I haven't given up any, anything," Smith said.
Using his upcoming wedding as motivation, Josh hoped to drop 30 pounds in 30 days.
So, with his iPod, he took off running. His iPod was actually connected to a receiver that linked to a small chip in the bottom of his shoes, which relayed data to the device.
"It gives calories, distance, your fastest mile, as well as your current pace," Smith said.
Smith said he likes knowing that information and said it helps him through his run – about five miles a day.
After three weeks, he had already lost 13.5 pounds, leaving a little over a week to shed the remaining 16.5 pounds.
Smith said that if he can't do it, he plans to cut fast food and soda from his diet.
After he reaches his goal weight Josh plans to continue running and live a healthy lifestyle.
